Using AI to Self Assess Brilliantly

Self Assessing Brilliantly is our annual, free-to-access webinar for anyone involved in evaluating and improving their provision, focused on making self assessment a driver of improvement.

Catch up on Self Assessing Brilliantly here.

This year we see increasing levels of AI-supported practice in quality, curriculum and assessment, teaching and learning, and governance. We also see the emerging role of quality professionals in shaping how organisations use AI across these areas. The graph below shows delegates’ perceived level of AI adoption across departments. The survey took place over three live sessions.

Drawing on specialist research, we developed the SDN Mesma Group AI Maturity Framework initially to guide how we use AI within our own systems and practices. Increasingly, our clients have asked how they can introduce AI across their own organisations in a sensible, systematic, and accountable way, so we started sharing the framework with them. This session builds on that experience.

We’ve broken the session recording into 2 x 15-minute parts…

Part 1: The role of AI in self asessment

In 2026, a growing volume of AI-generated documentation is reaching boards and governance groups. In many cases, those documents are not being sufficiently challenged. The question isn’t whether AI was used. The question is whether it was used appropriately…

  • Can those reviewing the document identify where professional judgement has been applied?
  • Can they confidently interrogate the evidence behind the narrative?
  • Can they distinguish between genuine evaluation and polished but superficial content?

This matters because compliance-driven self assessment is already a risk. When self assessment becomes a tick-box exercise, judgement loses local context and quality suffers. Without the right guardrails, AI can accelerate the problem.

In this section, we outline our AI maturity model and ask delegates to evaluate their organisations against the framework. The graph above represents the responses across three live sessions.

Part 2: Using AI to Self Assess Brilliantly – Mesma Demo

Mesma brings quality assurance and improvement practices together onto one platform. Evidence, diagnostics, actions and progress work together.  Analysis and insights support clear and confident decision-making.

Mesma underpins diagnostics in an unlimited number of applications, from self assessment aligned with the education inspection framework to observations of teaching, learning, and assessment aligned with the ETF standards, and your own diagnostics templates based on your own questions or criteria.

Mesma’s AI assistant, “Mia”, combines the power of AI with decades of sector expertise to give you a suite of tools you can trust.

Mesma’s AI assistant “Mia” user group advisory group feedback…

“A great piece of software to support our operations teams to feel more confident at writing their self-assessment. It helps them to address areas they may not typically look at.”

“Allows end-users to brainstorm and input quickly and get a decent summary. The ability for users to write generically and descriptively but get evaluative outputs is great.”

“Sometimes, quality assurance is left to a few people, and several rewrites/feedback points must be amended before we finalise reports. This reduces this significantly. I love what Mia offers, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it develops.”
